Botanical Art Drawing and Painting - 3 weeks | Jessie Rose Ford

We are delighted to announce that Jessie Rose Ford is coming back!

In this three-session workshop Jessie will guide you through her step-by-step process to create your own botanical drawing and painting. Over the three sessions (one each week) you will be shown how to master important drawing and watercolour techniques, specifically for use on botanicals, while learning the process of layering watercolours.

What will I learn?

•      Drawing materials and techniques

•      Observing tonal values and how demonstrate this using three graphite pencils

•       Basic colour theory

•       Matching and mixing the correct colour

•       Using masking fluid

•       Watercolour techniques including wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry and dry brush

•       How to avoid muddy and overworked watercolour paintings

Who is this workshop suitable for?

This workshop welcomes students of all experience levels, from beginners to advanced.

What do I need to bring?

Pencils: Greylead Pencils: 2H, HB and 2B

Paper:

  • Sketching pad or paper (A4 size is fine) I usually use loose sheets/copy paper that are usually used for printing on
  • Watercolour paper: 300gsm Smooth/Hot Press paper. (A4 size is fine) Suggested brand: Arches
  • Tracing paper 50gsm

Brushes: Round watercolour brushes in suggested sizes 00, 2, 4 and 6

Eraser: A soft ‘kneadable eraser’

Watercolour Palette: I prefer one with several wells to mix several mixtures in, such as the 20 well rectangle palette for $5.50 from Officeworks. Or you can simply use a white china plate instead

Watercolour paints - If you already own similar colours you do not necessarily need to go out and buy the specific colours suggested below:

  • Lemon Yellow (or another cool yellow eg. Winsor Lemon, Aureolin)
  • Scarlet Lake (or another warm red eg. Cadmium Red)
  • Ultramarine Blue (or another warm blue eg. Cobalt, Winsor Blue Red Shade)

Masking Fluid and Nib (If you don’t wish to buy these you can use Jessie’s during class)

  • Masking Fluid: Make sure it’s tinted and removable. Windsor & Newton is a reliable brand
  • Calligrapher’s nib & pen holder: A Speedball ‘Hunt’ 513EF works well. Or make sure it’s to use for fine lines.

Other:

  • A small cloth/face washer or paper towel for drying your brushes.
  • General eraser (eg. Staedtler or similar)
  • Sharpener
  • Masking Tape for taping your watercolour paper down.
  • A water resistant and sturdy board to tape your paper down onto - these are available to use in class so not essential for you to buy, however, if you’d like to take your painting home while still attached to a board please bring your own. eg. Drawing board that you can buy from an art shop, MDF, masonite/hardboard or plexiglass.

Alternately, rent a kit for $50 which will include everything you will need!

What is provided?

  • Water jars
  • Tea, coffee and biscuits (please bring your own mug)
  • A friendly, supportive and encouraging learning environment
  • Connection to the Bienarté art community
