Learn to Draw a Realistic Pet Portrait in Graphite Pencil

You can bring in an image of your favourite pet to draw!

In this 2 week mini course, Melbourne based artist Jessie Ford will demonstrate how to draw a realistic pet portrait using grey lead pencil.

What will I learn?

We will specifically cover the following:

  • Drawing materials – what to use and when
  • Transferring your photograph into a line drawing onto your drawing paper
  • Observing tonal values and how demonstrate this using three pencils
  • Tricks of the trade such as how to show shine on hair and get that sparkle in the eyes
  • Basic understanding of animal anatomy (we will focus on dogs here)

Make sure to bring along on the day a printed photograph of the pet you would like to draw, whether it be a dog, cat or bird it doesn’t matter! Make sure the image is high resolution (300ppi) and roughly the size of half an A4 sheet of paper (so 21 × 15cm). It can be in black and white or colour (black and white will be easier!)
