Charcoal & Grey Pastel Portrait | Tricia Reust

Charcoal & Grey Pastel Portrait | Tricia Reust

Over the course of the weekend, we will cover theory of facial features and basic design concepts with portraits and explore the portrayal of the human head.

This workshop is for those who are seeking a more accurate likeness in their portraiture, no matter what medium. Tricia will cover the geometric shapes that determine the placement of facial features and how individuals differ from the classical measurements. Using charcoal is a quick way to explore these measurements and accuracy checks.

There will be Colourfix paper on hand for purchase (from $2 per quarter sheet) Tricia will have some reference photo material or you are welcome to use your own.

What will I learn?

On the first day, two quarter-sheet portrait head studies will be created - one incorporating the theory covered, and the second work exploring using charcoal as a wet underpainting.

On the second day, participants will create a larger portrait using charcoal, and white and grey pastel. Pastel stroke-making will be explored, and using pastel wet.

Who is this workshop suitable for?

This workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced alike as my teaching process is that I provide a handout, will cover theory and will demonstrate every single step beforehand as we go along in the drawing process.  I aim to spend individual time with each student over the weekend too.
