Creating Light and Atmosphere in Oils | Herman Pekel

Join our world class award contemporary impressionist artist Herman Pekel.

Unearth fresh and honest art inside yourself and learn to capture it with oils. You will explore landscapes, seascapes and streetscapes and use a variety of oil techniques.

Workshops with Herman are inspiring and very productive. Expect to be challenged, to be brave, and to have fun!

What will I learn?

Herman will guide you through his step by step process - beginning with a fast foundation painting and ending with a range of final approach options that are easy to learn and thought-provoking. Most importantly, Herman will work with you to articulate your own vision and find solutions to your own challenges.
Herman will teach you to find originality in your own work and to get started with new ideas in a way that is fast and fun!

Who is this workshop suitable for?

This workshop is suitable for people with basic knowledge of oils.

What do I need to bring?

Canvas Board:
3 x Canvas Board or Stretched Canvas. Choose sizes you are comfortable painting but nothing over 1 meter. 16” x 12” (40cms x 30cms) is a good average.
Herman also likes MDF board, primed with white acrylic undercoat (not gesso)

Brushes:
Bring your normal oil painting brushes, including square brushes (flats).  Also bring acrylic painting brushes, including Large Synthetic Flats

Oil Colours:
Bring your favourite oil colours, but please ensure you also have
• Cadmium Yellow, • Alizarin Crimson, • Ultramarine Blue

Acrylic Colours:
To save preparation time, Herman will use acrylics in under-drawing. Please bring Primary colours plus White:
• Sienna (yellow) • Ultramarine (blue) • Alizarin (red)

Other Items:
• Odourless Solvent (Art Spectrum or other), bring in a sealable metal container
• Diggers Linseed oil with drying agents (available by the litre from Bunnings)
• Rubber shapers
• Flexible small palette knife
• Paper Plates/ Tear off disposable Palette (eg Reeves tear off palette 12” x 16” or approx. 30cms x 40cms), baking paper and clips
• Small water container
• Paper towel or rags – whatever you usually use to clean your brushes and palette
• A jar in which you can take home your dirty old cleaning fluid

Bring your lunch and snacks or you can purchase from cafes close by. 

What is provided?
